Primary: Effective debating in schools

This course will share practical strategies for developing a systematic approach to teaching debating in schools.

Outline

Teaching debating skills is a specific requirement of the national curriculum for English from lower key stage 2 onwards. Debating is an excellent preparation for persuasive and discursive writing and can also improve pupils’ confidence and self-esteem. Not only does it support pupils to express and justify their own opinions, it also provides a platform for them to think about how others feel.

Description

This workshop will outline and explore a systematic approach to teaching debating skills to KS2 pupils. The creation of an encouraging environment where everyone is motivated to speak up and learn to support their ideas through engaging games and activities will be a key focus of this session. A scaffolded approach to developing the language of persuasion and discussion will be demonstrated. Participants will receive a wide range of resources, plans and ideas to support them with developing debating in their own schools either at whole class level or in a debating club.

Outcomes

The course will support delegates to:
  • explore and develop a systematic approach to teaching debating skills to key stage 2 pupils
  • build up a bank of ideas and resources to develop debating in a fun and engaging way
